How a lightning arrester protects a solar system

The LA is the highest point on the roof, so a strike hits its tip instead of the panels. A down conductor then carries the current to its own earth pit, away from the solar equipment. The whole array has to sit inside the LA's zone of protection, which is why its height and position matter.

Ours are 17 mm copper-bonded MS (mild steel), 1 m long. Each comes with a PVC base that the rod stands on and five spikes that fit on top to form its head.

Installation notes

Mount the LA so that it stands clear above the array, and fix the PVC base firmly against the wind. Run the down conductor by the shortest, straightest route to an earth pit with a copper bonded earthing rod, keep it clear of the panel wiring, and test the pit's earth resistance after installation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a rooftop solar system need a lightning arrester?

Rooftop project specifications in India usually include one, because the array sits on the most exposed part of the building. Check the requirements for your project or DISCOM before you order.

How high should the lightning arrester be?

High enough that the whole array falls inside its zone of protection. Larger arrays need the arrester mounted higher, or more than one, and the system designer works this out from the roof layout. Ours is 1 m long.

What comes with your lightning arrester?

A PVC base and five spikes. The 1 m copper-bonded rod stands on the base, and the spikes fit on top of it to form the head.
