Where J hooks are used

Industrial sheds, warehouses and farm sheds with metal sheet roofs are common sites for rooftop solar. The sheet itself can't carry the structure, so the load has to go into the purlins below. A J hook passes through the sheet, hooks around the purlin and is tightened from above, tying the structure down quickly and without welding.

Ours are MS (mild steel), zinc coated, 5/16 × 2.5 inches. Each comes with a flange nut, whose wide base spreads the load, so no separate washer is needed.

Fitting J hook bolts on a tin shed

Drill the sheet on the crest, the raised part of the profile, not in the valley where the water runs. Hook the bolt around the purlin, seal the hole with roof sealant, and tighten the flange nut until the structure is firm, without crushing the sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Will J hooks make a tin shed roof leak?

Not if the holes are sealed. Drill on the crests of the sheet, not in the valleys, and seal each hole with roof sealant before tightening the flange nut.

Will the J hook fit my roof purlin?

That depends on the purlin's size and shape. Ours are 5/16 × 2.5 inches; send a photo or the purlin size on WhatsApp and we will confirm the fit.

Do your J hooks need a washer?

No. Each J hook comes with a flange nut, whose wide base spreads the load like a built-in washer, so no separate washer is needed.
