When to choose a hot-dip galvanized mid clamp

Choose HDG near the sea, in humid regions and on roofs close to factories or chemical plants: anywhere salt or fumes in the air eat zinc faster. Zinc protects steel by wearing away first, so a thicker coat lasts longer before rust reaches the clamp.

Our HDG mid clamp is 3 mm GI sheet with an 80 µm hot-dip galvanized coat, against 50 µm on our GI mid clamp kits. On an ordinary inland roof, the GI kit is usually enough.

Fitting notes

Order by frame height, 30 or 35 mm, from the panel datasheet. Fit one clamp on each rail or purlin at every joint between two panels, inside the panel maker's clamping zones, and tighten all the bolts evenly. Use zinc-coated nuts and bolts with it, so no bare steel is left to rust first.

What is the difference between HDG and GI clamps?

Both are steel protected by zinc. Hot-dip galvanizing leaves a much thicker coat: 80 µm on our HDG mid clamp, against 50 µm on our GI kits. The extra zinc lasts longer where corrosion is fast, which is why HDG is used on coastal and industrial sites.

Do I need HDG clamps on an inland rooftop?

Usually not. GI clamps do the job on most inland roofs. HDG is worth it where the air is salty, very humid or polluted, or where the structure is hard to reach for maintenance.

Can HDG clamps be used on a GI structure?

Yes. Both are zinc-coated steel, so they work together without problems. A structure lasts only as long as its weakest coating, though, so on a harsh site it pays to use heavier-coated parts throughout.
