Where MC4 connectors are used

Every panel's leads end in MC4 connectors, and installers use more of them to extend strings, make up cables to the DCDB and connect to the inverter. Each joint is a male plug and a female socket that latch together, with a seal that keeps out water and dust.

Our MC4 connectors have plastic housings, come in 1000 V and 1500 V ratings, and are sold in pairs: a male and a female connector for each joint.

Fitting notes

Strip the DC cable to the right length, crimp the metal contact on with an MC4 crimping tool, and push it into the housing until it clicks. Tighten the rear nut to seal around the cable.

Choose a voltage rating at or above your system's maximum DC voltage. Don't join connectors of different makes, because a mismatch can cause poor contact and heating, and never pull a connector apart under load.

1000 V or 1500 V MC4 connectors: which do I need?

Pick a rating at or above the highest DC voltage your strings can reach, including on cold mornings, when panel voltage rises. Most rooftop systems run below 1000 V; larger plants with long strings use 1500 V.

Can I mix MC4 connectors from different brands?

It's best not to. MC4-type connectors from different makes can look alike but differ slightly in size, which leads to poor contact, heating and failure. Use connectors of the same make on both sides of a joint.

Do I need a special tool to fit MC4 connectors?

Yes: an MC4 crimping tool for the metal contacts, and spanners or an unlocking tool for the nuts and latches. A contact crimped with pliers is a common cause of loose, hot joints.
