Where solar DC wire is used

DC wire runs from panel to panel along each string, then down to the DCDB and the inverter. Much of it lies in the sun on hot rooftops for years, so it has to be solar-grade cable made for UV and heat, not ordinary house wire.

Ours is copper with plastic insulation, in 2.5, 4 and 6 sq mm.

Choosing a solar DC cable size

4 sq mm is the usual size for string wiring on rooftop systems, and 6 sq mm keeps losses down on longer runs to the inverter. The right size depends on the string current and the length of the run, so follow the system design.

Use clearly marked cables for positive and negative, clip them to the structure, and keep them off sharp edges and out of standing water.

Frequently asked questions

4 sq mm or 6 sq mm DC cable: which should I use?

4 sq mm is standard for string wiring on most rooftop systems. Move up to 6 sq mm when the run from the array to the inverter is long or the current is high, to keep the voltage drop down.

Can I use ordinary wire on the DC side?

No. Ordinary house wire isn't made for years of sun and rooftop heat, and its insulation cracks. Use solar-grade DC cable for everything between the panels and the inverter.

Do you supply MC4 connectors to match?

Yes, in 1000 V and 1500 V ratings. Tell us your cable size when you order, so the connectors suit it.
